Carroll says: &#8220;it really didn\u2019t go well except that he had read\u00a0<em>The World<\/em>,&#8221; the St. Mark\u2019s literary magazine that had published Carroll\u2019s early work. Carroll sent Kerouac the manuscript of\u00a0<em>The Basketball Diaries<\/em>\u00a0sometime before 1969, then met Kerouac again shortly before Kerouac died. Kerouac wrote him a letter of introduction which provided the blurb, &#8220;At 13 years of age, Jim Carroll writes better prose than 89% of the novelists working today,&#8221; which appears on the back cover of the first edition of\u00a0<em>The Basketball Diaries<\/em>. Carroll says, &#8220;He thought I was carrying a torch, and in a spiritual sense, I was.&#8221; The poem &#8220;Highway Report&#8221; in\u00a0<em>Living at the Movies<\/em>\u00a0is dedicated to Kerouac. In 1997, Ryko released the multi-artist Kerouac tribute album\u00a0<em>Kicks Joy Darkness<\/em>; Carroll reads\/sings Kerouac&#8217;s poem &#8220;Woman&#8221; accompanied by Lee Ranaldo,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicboy.com\/WP\/background\/friends-influences\/important-people-in-carrolls-life-and-work\/artistic-influences-mentors-supporters\/lenny-kaye\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"9360\">Lenny Kaye<\/a>, and Anton Sanco.
