Void of Course<\/i><\/h2>\n

\nThe Trumpet<\/i> December 1999<\/span><\/p>\n

Void of Course<\/i> is a book of poetry written
\n by Jim Carroll. Carroll is also a diarist and rock musician. His work is not popularly
\n recognized, but he is widely known as the author of the book, The Basketball Diaries, <\/i>upon
\n which the 1995 movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is based. Carroll’s other works include The
\n Book of Nods, Forced Entries, <\/i>and Fear of Dreaming. <\/b><\/i>Since his teenage
\n years, Carroll has published numerous books of poetry. Void of Course <\/i>was released
\n in 1998. Carroll’s work has also appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone <\/i>and
\n other magazines.<\/b><\/p>\n

Each poem, out of the 75 included in Void of Course, <\/i>gives
\n insight into Carroll’s thoughts and opinions. One poem, “8 Fragments for Kurt
\n Cobain”, comments on the Nirvana lead singer and guitarists’ life and death. It was
\n performed on an episode of MTV Unplugged<\/i>. In the “7th Fragment” of this
\n poem he asks,<\/b><\/p>\n

\nBut Kurt….
\n Didn’t the thought that you
\n would never wnte another song
\n Another feverish line or riff
\n Make you think twice?<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

These lines are especially effective when the reader realizes that Kurt Cobain died by
\n his own hand.<\/p>\n

Void of <\/i>Course is a beautiful and thoughtful collection of his poetry. Carroll
\n just puts his thoughts out there and often correlates them with the odd situations we face
\n daily. He overcomes his loss of love and deeply expresses his emotions toward the chaotic
\n and manipulative world. In “Poem” he writes:<\/p>\n

\n I was wondering if the fire within your
\n tears is a reflection of the city as it burns
\n or the residue of desire and
\n rage
\n Then again it could be a substance of my fear<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\tThese lines reflect the instability of the modern reality in which we
\n live.<\/p>\n

Jim Carroll’s work in Void Of Course<\/i> is truthful and strong
\n which is inspiring to the teenagers of today. He helps others realize that they are not
\n alone in what they go through. Carroll is an outstanding writer in whatever he writes, and
\n I think his collection of poems is exceptional and inspirational. I recommend his book
\n highly.<\/p>\n
