Carroll Captivates Student Audience<\/h1>\n

\n The explicitly
\n powerful words of author, poet and musician Jim Carroll filled the Seretean Center as well
\n as the minds of several Oklahoma State University students Tuesday night.\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
\n

<\/a><\/p>\n


\n Jim Carroll, poet and musician, performs Tuesday evening. Carroll is well known for his
\n volumes of poetry and prose including \u201cThe Basketball Diaries.\u201d He was brought
\n to OSU by the SUAB and the SGA Speakers Board. <\/span><\/p>\n

Carroll, the
\n author of several volumes of poetry and prose, including “The Basketball
\n Diaries,” which later was made into a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, performed
\n several of his signature poems and stories for a fairly large audience.<\/p>\n

Ginger Sorrels, counseling senior,
\n said Carroll’s performance was entertaining. <\/p>\n

“I liked
\n this venue much better (than Gallagher-Iba Arena),” Sorrels said. “I especially
\n liked the end, when he was doing his songs.”<\/p>\n

Sorrels said
\n she was somewhat familiar with Carroll’s work. She had seen “The Basketball
\n Diaries” and looked up some of his poems on the Internet when she heard he was coming
\n to OSU.<\/p>\n

Carroll began
\n the evening on a humorous note, with a prose piece titled “A Day at the Races,”
\n a story about racing pubic crabs with a woman named Jenny.<\/p>\n

“Golly,
\n what a woman \u2014 who can turn an ailment into a viable recreation,” Carroll said. <\/p>\n

He mentioned
\n his struggle to free himself of drug addiction on several occasions. <\/p>\n

“I got
\n clean in California,” he said. “And I went back to New York to see if I could
\n stay clean.”<\/p>\n

He performed
\n pieces on topics ranging from performance artists to satanists, an overweight bat and a
\n tribute to Kurt Cobain. <\/p>\n

He spoke about
\n the “worst cat of all time,” a cat that had a taste for semen, among other odd
\n habits.<\/p>\n

Doug Martin,
\n English graduate student, said he enjoyed the performance a lot.<\/p>\n

“When I
\n was a young pup, Jim Carroll was my idol,” Martin said. “Because he’s like a
\n tent that zoomed from Mars back to the kitchen salad.”<\/p>\n

As the
\n performance progressed, Carroll delved into his poetry and songs.<\/p>\n

One fast-paced
\n poem was actually a message he left on someone’s answering machine, he said. <\/p>\n

He shared
\n several of his observations on poets and mosquitoes.<\/p>\n

“There
\n are too many poets and not enough mosquitoes,” he said. “A poet sees an owl and
\n sees a woman’s crotch. A mosquito sees a poet, and he sees a woman’s crotch. Poets and
\n mosquitoes have one thing in common \u2014 they both suck.”<\/p>\n

He acquired a
\n more serious demeanor as he performed a capella song lyrics. <\/p>\n

“If you
\n know how it ends, why did you let it begin?…You can’t live without the beast
\n within,” he sung in a low growl.<\/p>\n

He will
\n release a new album this fall, a mixture of songs and spoken word set to music.<\/p>\n

Carroll signed
\n books and chatted with audience members after the performance \u2014 answering questions,
\n accepting praise and sketches from devoted fans. <\/p>\n

Ryan Jewell,
\n music freshman, was one of the fans. <\/p>\n

“I bought
\n ‘Fear of Dreaming’ when I was 15. It was the first book of poetry I ever bought,”
\n Jewell said. “It was very cool to see him, since I have liked him so long.”<\/p>\n

Carroll said
\n he felt a “good energy” with the OSU audience.<\/p>\n

“I can
\n feel (the energy) right away in an audience,” he said. “In the middle, you kind
\n of have to retake the pulse and adjust.”<\/p>\n

Carroll has a
\n new book that will be published this fall called “Void of Course.”<\/p>\n

“It’s an
\n astrological term. I’m not really into astrology, but it means you don’t have a moon
\n sign,” he said. “I liked the sound of it. I’m always void.” <\/p>\n\n
