Wilson<br><a href=\"http:\/\/www.statenews.com\">The State News<\/a>, Michigan State University<br>20 February 1998<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catholicboy.com\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/msu1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6243\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Courtesy of Jim Carroll \n\ufeff\nJim Carroll is widely known for his famous book turned mainstream movie, \u201cThe Basketball Diaries,\u201d and will be making two stops in Michigan this weekend. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Like many who associated themselves with psychedelic drug trips and carefree living during the past three decades, artists have been dismissed as just \u201canother junkie.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drugs and unorthodox views hail some of those \u201cjunkies\u201d we as a society love to adore \u2014 Timothy Leary, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their world of drug abuse, decorated fame and societal pressure paralyzed them, crippling them to a death which made them legends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of those other \u201cjunkies\u201d who sustained life\u2019s trials \u2014 Courtney Love, Boy George, the late William S. Burroughs and most notably, renowned poet and rock performer Jim Carroll.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carroll is widely known for his famous book turned mainstream movie, \u201cThe Basketball Diaries.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once a Catholic smart-mouth from the streets of New York City, Carroll\u2019s preadolescent life is captured in this diary. With the success of the film, starring pre-\u201cTitanic\u201d heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio, and the sudden interest in the Beat Generation (Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac), Carroll\u2019s name finally engraved itself for global&nbsp;recognition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Basketball Diaries,\u201d joins a string of written works by Carroll including, \u201cThe Book of Nods,\u201d the former Pulitzer Prize nominee \u201cLiving at the Movies,\u201d and \u201cThe Basketball Diaries\u201d sequel, \u201cForced Entries: The Downtown Diaries 1971-1973.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A collection released in 1993 called, \u201cFear of Dreaming: The Selected Poems of Jim Carroll,\u201d includes 15 fairly recent poems by Carroll and a multitude of previously printed works.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carroll\u2019s work doesn\u2019t stop there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the late 1970s to mid-1980s, the Jim Carroll Band had a trio of albums, including the tagged \u2018punk anthem,\u2019 \u201cPeople Who Died\u201d from the \u201cCatholic Boy\u201d album.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPraying Mantis,\u201d a 1991 release of spoken-word performances and \u201cA World Without Gravity: The Best of The Jim Carroll Band\u201d was released in 1993 as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carroll has a rushing drive to share his life and his opinions concerning present vitality. His approach is so appealing that an instant attraction manifests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with creating his own work, Carroll has also participated in several side projects such as \u201cKerouac: Kicks Joy Darkness,\u201d a tribute compilation of the late Kerouac\u2019s poems set to music.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carroll is featured reading and singing \u201cWoman\u201d accompanied by Sonic Youth\u2019s Lee Ranaldo, former Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye and Anton Sanco.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with Carroll, Patti Smith, Steven Tyler, Michael Stipe and Hunter S. Thompson contribute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 1998 Spoken-Word Tour reestablishes Jim Carroll\u2019s rule in overcoming barriers of societal conformity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, he makes his first Michigan appearance in two years at Ann Arbor\u2019s Blind Pig and on Saturday at the Magic Stick in Detroit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tickets are $12.50 and are still available through TicketMaster by calling (517) 484-5656.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mystical, mesmerizing genius who characterizes the art of being an individual \u2014 Jim Carroll.
