Jim Carroll Review by Kevin
Brilliant !!!! Jim was wonderful. I attended the first show, full house. Jim shared a funny story about a passenger onboard a Southwest Airlines flight that basically felt it important to tell Jim how “Jayne Mansfield was his life” and how he was at the now infamous crash scene Jayne died at. Jim entertained us with a great sense of humor and shared his wonderful poetry, ranging from a prose piece (“Just Visiting”) in Fear Of Dreaming and a selection from Forced Entries (“A Day at the Races”); listening to Jim read it was so perfect. Finally he read several pieces from Void Of Course–I love that book !!! Including “8 Fragments For Kurt Cobain” and ending with my favorite, simply titled POEM (last one published in Void Of Course) and includes the opening lines, “Nobody is going to ruin me, if I have to I will ruin myself.” I was so jazzed he read that; it’s my favorite in his Pools Of Mercury CD too. Jim is awesome, I met him last year (shook his hand) at The Bottom Line and once again, as I walked out of The Bottom Line last night and strolled up toward Washington Square Park, all I could think is how fortunate we are to have his talent, his timeless poetry and how gracious he is to share his work with us. Thank You Jim !!! I look forward to more, wonderful shows in the near future.. Because as you say, “There will always be the poem.”
