Review of I Write Your Name
CMJ New Music Report
30 January 1984
A somewhat less obtuse effort from Carroll with music that more tersely highlights his lyrics and brings his oft-fragmented images more clearly into focus. Included are a good dose of strong rockers, heady yet ethereal ballads and a fine cover of Lou Reed’s classic “Sweet Jane.” Don’t be scared off by Carroll’s “image.” He’s a brilliant poet and troubador with a razor-sharp rock edge-and his music deserves to be heard. Top tracks: “Luxuries,” “Hold Back The Dreams” and “Low Rider.”
