Trinity School "Tigers" Basketball Team, 1968
Photo and text from the 1968 Trinity School Yearbook.
"The Varsity Basketball team had a successful winning season, but at times it was an erratic and disappointing one. With spirited optimism and justified hopes for the first Ivy League title since 1959, Mr. Maxim's ["Dudley Doolittle"] tigers won their first four games. Following initial setbacks to Hackley, Riverdale, and Horace Mann, the Varsity bounced back to defeat every team in the Ivy League, except the championship Riverdale squad. In compiling a 7-5 Ivy League record the Tigers relied heavily on three seniors, Bob Antin ["Anton Neutron"], Marc Blane ["Marc Clutcher"], and Jim Carroll. "All Ivy" Bob Antin and Marc Blane were consistent shooters and performers and both averaged over 27 points per game. "All Ivy" Carroll added occasional spectacular performances and averaged 17 points, while Craig Walker, a junior, gained experience and scored frequently, and Robert Catannacio added defensive rebounding strength."
Back row: Mr. Maxim ("Dudley Doolittle"), Adam Baumgold ("Eggie Blaumgarten"), S. Harris, Bob Antin ("Anton Neutron"), Bob Catenaccio, Jim Carroll (Captain--holding ball), Craig Walker, Marc Blane ("Marc Clutcher"), Roth, Mr. Munger. Front row, Managers: Schack, Munger, Rose.
DISCLAIMER:
Although I have good evidence to support the identification of Jim Carroll's "characters" in The Basketball Diaries as the real people depicted in Trinity's Yearbook, I want to emphasize that these identifications are my interpretations. Carroll concealed their identities for a reason, and I respect his decision to do so.
